Proposed 775% Pipe Tobacco Tax Increase!

Well, we can’t say we didn’t see it coming. The greedy US government wants to bring pipe tobacco into the already insane taxation of cigarettes, cigars, and roll your own tobacco, in order to waste more taxpayer money on bailouts, wars, and general idiocy. Two Democrats from Texas and Tennessee  have introduced Bill H.R. 4439 to raise the federal pipe tobacco tax from $2.8311 to $24.78 per pound. Here’s how that works out for us:

$2.43 increase per 50gr
$2.74 increase per 2oz
$4.86 increase per 100gr
$10.98 increase per 8oz
$21.95 increase per 16oz
$24.15 increase per 500gr

We have to do something to fight this, in this so-called democracy we live in where we are being increasingly controlled every day. Please visit Pipes Magazine in order to send an automated email or letter to your congressman and senator. Additionally, here is an online petition.

Dunhill tobacco is coming back

…supposedly. I can’t 100% confirm what I’ve heard, but I’ve been informed that Dunhill pipe tobacco blends are going to be produced again, and will be available within the next month or so. Again, I can’t promise this is going to happen, but credible sources have told me this, and I’ve also seen a few mentions of it around some web forums.

I’ve got a tin of Standard Mixture Medium aging, but I may open it once I see these tobaccos resurface. So, you collector’s out there may want to dust off your cellared tins and make a few bucks on them before it all comes back. Then again, I don’t know who is going to produce it, and if the quality will be the same. Here’s to looking forward to finally trying some Early Morning Pipe!

Bill Taylor, of Ashton-Taylor Pipes, passes away

I’m sad to announce that I’ve recently found out that Bill Taylor, founder and carver of Ashton-Taylor pipes, passed away yesterday. I’ve come by this news via the smokingpipes.com newsletter. He was a true innovator in the world of pipemaking, having come a long way since his start as an apprentice in the Dunhill factory long ago.

New Stanwell’s at Allegheny Smokeworks

I just wanted to let everyone know that Allegheny Smokeworks just got in a shipment of 12 Stanwell pipes, along with 4 Winslow Crown of Denmark’s. My favorite of the bunch was the Stanwell 126 Golden Danish, which I almost purchased but ended up going home with a Chacom Army 34 instead. It’s a beauty.

Pipe Rage

I’m sorry to report that a member of our illustrious pipe club was assaulted last night in what could only be described as a case of “pipe rage”.   The member (who will remain un-named) was partaking in a relaxing bowl of VBC when suddenly an elderly gentleman, who witness describe as drunk and confused, came running out of no where and tackled the member, shouting something like “Sic semper pipists!” with a distinct british accent.  Although we thought such pipe related bigotry had been left in the old world, this was a good reminder that not everyone understands the joy of piping.  One can only assume that perhaps as a young lad his father beat him with a Dunhill, but this is mere speculation.  Luckily the victim and his Saseini were unharmed in the altercation, however a relight was required.
