Breaking in a new pipe

Lately, I’ve been trying to break in a few of my non-estate pipes, namely my Chacom Army and Radice. They’re two of my best pipes, so I think they deserve a proper break in so I can enjoy them as they are meant to smoke. Both of them so far are a bit problematic in terms of staying lit, but I’m currently blaming that on the lack of cake. I don’t have many pipes that were purchased brand new, so it’s hard to compare, but most of my estate smokers are great since they are already broken in.

The one new pipe that has smoked great since day one is the Stanwell Vario 186, but I’m thinking that is due to the coating they put in the bowl. The Chacom and Radice are all natural on the inside, so I have to be a lot more careful in the initial smokes as to not burn the bowl.  I’ve been smoking half bowls trying to get the elusive cake at the bottom of the bowl, and doing the “shake that ash” technique once I’m done. I think it’s working well so far, but I’ll keep you updated :)
