Given the Richmond Pipe Show & my anniversary occurring on the same weekend last saturday, the turnout for pipe club wasn’t exactly what we were looking for. Here’s how we can make up for it:

The washington co. guys are planning to show up with their finds from the CORPS show, so let’s all show up for a relaxing fall morning at Allegheny Smokeworks.
Our monthly gathering at Allegheny Smokeworks in Blawnox, PA will be on Saturday, April 10th from 10AM until noonish. Come on out and sample some tobacco, drink some coffee, and enjoy the fellowship of other pipe smokers. Hope to see you there!
I just wanted to get out a “happy new years” to everyone, and believe it or not it’s already time to meet up again! The holidays sped by quickly, and sadly I’m assuming we’re all back to work at this point. I can’t think of a better cure for the winter work blues than a cozy smoke filled Saturday morning with tasty pastries at Allegheny Smokeworks.
We’ll be meeting this Saturday from 10-12 in Blawnox, so c’mon down!
Upon reading CNN this morning and finding an article on the various film portrayals of Sherlock Holmes throughout the history of cinema, my interest has peaked in seeing the new film. It opens on Christmas day, and obviously there will have to be pipe smoking involved in the viewing of this film somehow… The problem is we can no longer smoke nearly anywhere, so my suggestion would be to possibly form a Saturday meetup at the smokeworks in Blawnox, followed up by a viewing at the Waterworks Cinema?

PPC met yesterday at Allegheny Smokeworks in Blawnox, PA. I believe that we had a record number of pipemen on hand. I lost count actually. More importantly than numbers was the excellent fellowship among the men. Conversations just seemed to flow as we shared tobacco and compared pipes. The lounge area, front foyer and retail areas were filled. Thomas James, pipe craftsman, brought along some of his new briar creations. Also, Rob from Clarion, PA joined us and I believe he represents the furthest distance traveled for a PPC gathering.
We had some discussion about a holiday gathering so I will be researching some options for us.

Sometimes once a month just isn’t enough… so I just wanted to inform everyone (with incredibly late notice) that a few of us are planning on going to good ol’ Allegheny Smokeworks tomorrow AM from 10-12. This isn’t a full scale meetup, but with all the work stress I’ve been going through lately, I figure this is a great way to unwind. Shawn #2 will be bringing along some new blends and hopefully his new estate Caminetto for show & tell. I’ll bring my latest catch – an estate Stanwell model 70 volcano – also.
If I’m feeling crazy maybe I’ll even show up with some tasty treats from Oakmont Bakery!
Wow! What a great time was had this past Saturday morning as The Pittsburgh Pipe Club gathered again at Allegheny Smokeworks. It was wonderful to see all of you there. The pipe collections that were showcased were amazing. The stories from the CORPS show in Richmond were captivating. We welcomed some new folks on saturday and really had pipe smokers in all of the lounge area and most of the store. Also, local pipe maker Thomas James brought some of his briar creations. What beautiful work he does!
Next month we will be meeting again at Allegheny Smokeworks in Blawnox PA on Saturday, November 14 from 10AM until noon. We welcome you to become involved in the friendliest pipe club around! Our format is pretty low key and you can count on fresh donuts and coffee and lots of tobacco to sample.
Pittsburgh Pipe Club is growing, as was witnessed yesterday at our monthly meetup. I believe I counted around 15 people in attendance, and we even had overflow out of the lounge into the other areas of the shop. John Seiler brought along a group of Castello 65′s to show, and Homer brought along a large collection of wares he obtained at the Richmond pipe show. Gary brought along his new Comoy’s Christmas Pipe he got on ebay for a steal, and I brought the newest additions to my collection – the Le Nuvole Barilotto and my big Boswell. Tom showed up again with his amazing craftwork, including his first ever Hawkbill which went to John. Be sure to check out John’s Leopaldo Saga on his personal site for some excellent pipe fiction.
Mike from Allegheny Smokeworks graciously gave us a tin of Peterson 3 P’s to sample, and I got to put my new “herb” grinder to use for breaking up a slice of the plug. I feel as though I can finally start enjoying some flake tobaccos in proper fashion due to the addition of the grinder, so I purchased a tin of Fribourg & Treyer Cut Blended Plug, as recommend by Bill Unger.
We had some new folks show up, experienced and new pipe smokers, including another Shawn. It’s great to see the club growing, and I’m hoping word can spread even more via new members and via the web. We’re outgrowing our meetup space, but that’s not really a bad problem to have. I’m already looking forward to next month, but I’m just hoping I’ll be in town since I may have to do a bunch of travel coming up for work…
